Fresher's Rep Candidates

We can finally announce the candidates who will be running for the Fresher's Representative role! Read their descriptions and meet them at the election on Wednesday the 28th of October 2015 @ 7pm upstairs in Peppermint Swansea!

The Candidates!

Candidate #1 Joshua Packman

Josh Packman
My name is Joshua Packman and this is my application to be the Freshers Representative of the History Society. I am a very sociable person and have made many new friends within my first week of Freshers, many of which I made prior to attending through social media, I believe this is a key skill which is needed to be the Freshers Representative as it would me my job to help other first years be as enthusiastic as I am to participate in events organised by the History Society. I am also a very organised person and have had previous experience in organising events such as my secondary schools Christmas events as part of my Welsh baccalaureate week, this gave me responsibility as if I had sat back and not done anything then I would be letting everyone else down including myself, this gave me the drive to complete any tasks I’m given to the best of my ability showing how I am a strong candidate for the role. If voted for the role then I will dedicating a large part of my time to help the committee make all our events and workshops the best they can be.

Candidate #2 Tyler Thatcher

Tyler Thatcher
I am a passionate student of history. There are many cool aspects of history and I find it a fascinating subject, there’s always some new piece of information waiting to be found that will completely change our views on the past. I feel everyone should understand the importance of history as many of the things that are used to study the past are relevant in today’s world. For example the need to question everything and the understanding of why certain events cause certain things to happen. This is precisely why I feel I should be considered for the role of Freshers Representative, because to me history is such an important subject and I hope to help other people in first year become as enthusiastic as I am. I also would like to help other first years communicate more with their fellow students and other members of the society who may be willing to talk or help them. I have always been told that I have a friendly nature and am happy to talk to anyone which is quite an important aspect in a role such as this.

Candidate #3 Lucy Roach

Lucy Roach
My name is Lucy Roach. I am studying English Literature and History, and I would like to become the Fresher’s Representative because I have numerous qualities I believe would be an asset to the History Society’s committee. During my time in sixth form, I made the decision to take on roles that would help me to develop new skills and confidence. In year 12, I took part in a national competition called Young Enterprise in which a team of us had to set up our own business for a year. My official role within the team was financial director, therefore I have some experience of handling money, but I was also heavily involved in all areas of the business. On moving into year 13, I applied to become a member of the senior prefect team and obtained the role of Senior Deputy Head Girl. This role involved organising resources for sixth form with members of staff, fundraising, and playing an important role in organising the year 13 Prom; including sourcing venues, collecting money, and helping organise the details. To summarise, I am extremely interested in the role because I would like the opportunity to contribute to the History Society.

Candidate #4 Lucy Berry

Lucy Berry
Hi, my name’s Lucy and I’m studying History. I would love to be the History Freshers Representative this year, and I feel like I would be good at the role as I work well with groups of people and have displayed both team and leadership skills by helping out with classes at my local dance school (and will continue to do so next summer). I love getting involved in both academic and social events; during my time at sixth form, I became a team leader of both the Social & Fun and Learning Linc committee, therefore connecting myself with the school in order to help fulfil the wishes of the students. I find that I can easily adapt myself when talking in either of these situations (social or academic), which I believe is key in dealing with different groups of people. I can be quite a shy person, but I feel like becoming involved with such a fantastic committee would really help my confidence levels, which would be a big step for me. I’m not typically the most academic person, but I listen well to what people want, which I consider to be a key factor of a successful representative.

Candidate #5  Owain Brooks

Owain Brooks
Carpe Historum! I was born to be a Historian and to overcome challenges. Experience has taught me that whilst much of history is written by the victorious, there is more richness in studying the underdogs, the marginalised and the minority groups that often go unnoticed in the world. I live in Swansea, went to School here and wanted to spend my University career here. I know the area and would love to share my love of Gower and Swansea with my History colleagues. I am enthusiastic, motivated, hardworking and would give this position everything.  As I say above I would seek to include everyone in all events and give them the true University experience.
