So, it is that time of year where the members of our society need to elect the new committee for next year's society. This is your opportunity to apply for a position on a great committee where you learn so many important skills that can be applied in a work environment.
The positions with their role details that are available this year are;~
- President:
The President is responsible for the overall running of the History Society and acts as spokesperson for the History Society, the main point of contact for the committee, the society members, the History Department and the Union. The President is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the committee and History Society members. They are responsible for sharing out tasks among the committee and ensuring that each committee member has a role to play within the society. They are also responsible for calling and organising meetings and full Society meetings such as the AGM. It is also their responsibility to support each of their committee members with their roles to make sure they are carried out correctly and without any problems. In addition, it is their role to settle any disputes between committee members and support the rest of the committee.
- Social Secretary:
The Social Secretary is responsible for organising and planning a variety of social events and/or trips with the support of the committee and ensuring that all Society members and History department staff are informed of events via social media or email. It is also their responsibility to submit risk assessments and room booking to the Students’ Union two weeks before any event or trip.
- Secretary:
The Secretary is responsible for the administrative side of the History Society, such as agendas, minutes and organisation of the Gmail account. They must be organised and reliable as minutes must be done within 5 days of a committee meeting and agendas must be within 24 hours of a committee meeting and both must be uploaded to the Society Dropbox account and the other committee members informed. They are responsible for ensuring each of the committee members complete their roles as laid out in the Minutes after a meeting. They are also responsible for ensuring that all emails in the Gmail are organised and responded to within a short period of time. It is their responsibility to ensure all members are informed via email of events taking place and particularly of notifying members of AGMs/elections within 14 days, general meetings within 10 days and extraordinary meetings within 5 days.
- Treasurer:The treasurer is responsible for the financial affairs of the History Society and must keep records of the Society account and finances. It is their responsibility to look after the Society’s money box and to work with the Student Union Finance Office to make sure the Society account always has enough money for events and no financial losses are made from events. They are also responsible for requesting cheques/petty cash/bank transfers/grant funding from the Finance Office and ensuring that and that there is enough money in the account for the committee the next year.
The following roles are new for this year and will need to be voted on before they can be voted in for;
- Vice President (new role)The Vice President is for taking on the responsibilities of the President in their absence (such as calling committee meetings, making sure the committee carry out all their tasks). They are also responsible for maintaining links with Careers Advisers in COAH, Historical Association Swansea Branch, History Department staff and the public. It is also their responsibility alongside other committee members, to ensure all society members are informed of events that take place via social media and email. It is their responsibility to maintain the Facebook, Twitter and Blogger pages.
- Academic Officer (new role)
The Academic Officer is responsible for encouraging, organising and instigating academic events, such as academic workshops and organising for speakers to come to the university for academic talks. They are jointly responsible with the Treasurer and President for ensuring that financial losses are not made from these events and for applying for grants to the Finance Office to help fund these events and allow them to be free for students. It is also their responsibility to support and continue links with the Swansea Historical Association Branch, Holocaust Memorial Day Trust and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
